Congressman Vargas welcomes PCAforLife and ZERO Prostate Cancer

Today was our day to head to Capitol Hill, and despite the cold, we were ready to advocate.

Following thorough preparation from the ZERO Prostate Cancer trainers, an army of 140 advocates from 26 states marched toward the Hill. Our mission was clear: secure support from members of Congress for critical prostate cancer funding.

As part of the California contingency, our team—including Daniel (a ZEROPC director), Dave, Jesus, and myself—first met with Congressman Juan Vargas. We had a unique advantage, as my nephew Andrew has served as senior staff on the Hill for five years and is well-connected with other legislative teams.

The meeting with Congressman Vargas was exceptional. He welcomed us into his personal office and immediately put us at ease. We shared our personal testimonies and presented our three core requests:

- $20 million for CDC prostate cancer activities to support outreach, education, and resources for high-risk populations, including African-American men.

- $130 million for the Department of Defense’s Prostate Cancer Research Program for FY2026.

- Cosponsorship of Representative Greg Murphy’s upcoming legislation to codify the POPCaP program, ensuring Veterans continue to receive high-quality cancer care through the VA.

After discussing these priorities, we enjoyed a great conversation about our hometowns and families.

Next, we headed to the Hart Building to meet with Senator Adam Schiff’s office. We spoke with staff representative Colin, where we shared our cancer journeys. Our personal stories truly resonated and underscored the importance of our legislative requests.

It was a productive and meaningful experience. Now, it is time to head to the airport and return home.
